| Description | As elsewhere, there is concern in Australia about the part played by fatigue in truck crashes. Several Australian states restrict a trucker's hours of service to 11 or 12 per 24 hour-period in an attempt to limit fatigue as a causal factor in road crashes involving heavy goods vehicles. These regulations are enforced by requiring drivers to maintain a log book of their hours of service, which must be produced on demand from a police officer. While fatigue has been found to be a significant contributor to road crashes (e.g., Hartley, Arnold, Penna, Hichstadt, Corry, & Feyer, 1996a; Haworth, Heffernan, & Home, 1989: Ryan & Spittle, 1995; Sweatman, Ogden, Haworth, Pearson, & Vulcan, 1990; Tyson, 1992; Williamson, Feyer, Coumarelos, 8cJenkins, 1992), the effectiveness of specific hours of service restrictions for the control of fatigue and resultant reduction of crashes is not clear.
