| Description | Many patients who live in a remote area or must relocate ask for treatment online using Skype. Using Skype to communicate with friends and loved ones, patients and analysts naturally are not concerned about confidentiality. In the United States the analyst must be licensed by professional discipline both in the state where the analyst practices and the state in which the patient resides. Indications for teleanalysis include the relocation of patient or analyst, immobilization because of physical or mental illness of the patient or significant others, physical immobility of the analyst, travel that interrupts continuity of care and lack of local access to psychoanalysis for patient or prospective analytic candidate. Teleanalysts admit to valuing continuity of care over interpreting resistance to enforced separation and loss. Adapting analysis to the reality of the changing needs and ways of communicating of patients in a rapidly changing digital culture is essential if psychoanalysis is to survive.
