| Description | Professing Post Keynesian economists who practice the black art of econometrics must be like Caesar's wife. They cannot, on the one hand, adopt a “holier than thou” attitude to what they consider to be the fallacious practices of mainstream economists and econometricians while, on the other, using the selfsame procedures to test the empirical validity of their Post Keynesian theorizing. This dilemma has arisen as a consequence of the cathartic process that Post Keynesian economics has undergone over the past decade. Faced with continuing indifference, or even outright hostility from the mainstream (Walters and Young 1997), Post Keynesians have sought to define what commitment to the credo of Post Keynesianism actually means. They have realized that it is no longer sufficient for them to march shoulder to shoulder under the banner of anti-neoclassicism (Lawson 1994). A number of Post Keynesian scholars (Arestis 1992; Arestis, Dunn and Sawyer 1999; Dow 1996, 1997, 2001; Lavoie 1992; Lawson, A. 1994, 1997, 1998; Lawson, T. 1999) have sought to define Post Keynesian economics in terms of its compatibility with transcendental and critical-realist methodology. While not all Post Keynesians may yet have accepted all of the implications of sailing under the flag of transcendental/critical realism, there is an increasing recognition that it provides a methodological approach that accommodates most Post Keynesians' perceptions of how socio-economic problems should be studied.
