Use of an Interactive Teaching Program to teach Medical Workers about Mumps Programming

| Abstract | The MUMPS computer language is widely and increasingly used for medical applications. It is useful for medical students and others in the medical environment to have an understanding of such languages that can help them perform their jobs well. The author is therefore making available an interactive teaching program to instruct such people in the MUMPS computer language. Use of the teaching program is reported for 19 novice MUMPS programmers and compared with results for two experienced programmers. Free-text comments by the novices emphasize areas in which they had difficulty. There is a considerable variation in the mean time taken by the novices to answer the questions, and in the number of questions repeated because of erroneous answers. Most novices found the teaching program very helpful. A copy of the Standard MUMPS teaching program and the QUEST driver on which it is based has been sent to 24 institutions, including six in Europe and one in Japan, for further use. Le langage MUMPS est de plus en plus employé dans les applications médicales. II est apparu utile que les étudiants en médecine et les autres personnes travailant en milieu médical puissent avoir de solides notions sur ce langage. Dans ce but, 1′auteur a mis au point un programme conversationnel enseignant 1′utilisation du langage MUMPS. Ce programme d'enseignement a été testé sur 19 programmeurs MUMPS débutants, et les résultats de ce test ont été comparés à ceux de 2 programmeurs expérimentés. Ce test a mis en évidence les points où les débutants ont rencontré des difficultés. On constate, chez eux, une variation très appréciable du temps moyen de résponse aux questions posées dans le test; mais la plupart d'entre eux ont trouvé que le programme d'enseignement leur était très utile. Une copie de ce programme, écrit en MUMPS standard, et la logique de 1′enseignement programme sur laquelle il repose (QUEST), ont été données à 24 organismes dont 6 se trouvent en Europe et un au Japon. |
