| Description | This chapter investigates the thought of children in the hope of finding in it some clues to the prehistory of dialectical thinking and tracing the antithesis, but also the roots, of dialectical thinking in the primitive aspects of infantile intelligence. For the psychologist, dialectical thinking is a product of long development and the most complex of the higher forms of intelligence. Hence, it is quite natural for the psychologist to try to trace the development of thought and to determine the sources of dialectical thinking. A dialectical command of things and of one's own behavior requires time, and an analysis of the deficiencies and mistakes made by a primitive creature in performing operations with things provides a very illuminating picture of the phase in the development of thought. Verbal thinking, engendered by dialectics, assumes certain essential organizing functions in the child's behavior, and he begins his metamorphosis from a bee to an architect.
