Health Science Professional Literatures and Their Users

Description	Information behaviors of the major health sciences professionals are described, in particular those of physicians, nurses, and public health workers. Biomedical researchers are mentioned to illustrate new approaches to information. Continuing barriers to information use include information overload and lack of time, but there is also increasing use of Web resources and growing self-sufficiency. Strong preferences are apparent for information resources that are convenient, accessible, customized, and “just in time.” Challenges remain in motivating busy health care professionals to adopt routine information-seeking strategies. Future work should focus on embedding information in workflows by using new technologies and new workers such as informationists.
