| Description | Despite an overwhelming literature, there is no convergence to an understanding of how organizations do or should operate. The common experience seems to be that organizational change does not yield the promised results and, invariably, managers end up managing the unwanted side-effects of their own efforts. This chapter briefly reviews how we think about organizations and where complexity sits in the theoretical menagerie. The dual nature of organizational life is highlighted - on the one hand, institutions designed to enact a specific purpose; on the other, communities of people who interact with each other to make their activities meaningful at a local level.
