| Description | The year 1827 saw the publication of two volumes of poetry which captured the decline and transformation of the Cockney aesthetic developed in Keats's writing for John Taylor in the previous decade. Thomas Hood's collection of poetry The Plea of the Midsummer Fairies and George Darley's lyrical drama Sylvia; or, the May Queen both took a sentimental enchanted spirit world as their theme, and both made free use of intertextual allusion and imitation. 'The Plea of the Midsummer Fairies' will refer to the specific poem; when italicized, the title will refer to the overall collection. In the poems' ornate and allusive style can be seen adaptation remediation of the Cockney sublime, aimed at different readers and new forms of consumption. Hull describes Tales from Shakespeare as 'a project designed essentially to introduce children to the nation's greatest playwright through the erasure of theatre'. Book Name: Romantic Adaptations |
