| Description | To make appropriate recommendations for matching students who are gifted with suitable services, it is critical that school counselors have at least some foundational knowledge about programming for students. Thus, it is important that the counselor have a solid understanding of academic and affective characteristics and needs of students who are gifted to ensure there is a match between their needs and the programming that is being provided. National Association for Gifted Children Pre-K-Grade 12 Gifted Programming Standards emphasize a continuum of services as the programming exemplar. Recent reports indicate that programming options encompass the range of available offerings most often chosen by school districts to meet the needs of their gifted learners. Because services are provided to gifted learners in the regular classroom, there is not a need to hire additional teachers, making differentiation as a program option quite prevalent at a time when school budgets have been significantly downsized.
