| Description | Having established their canonical status in South Korean literature, Ch'oe Inhun (1936–2018) and Pak Wansŏ (1931–2011) continued to use the form of the novel to write about their experiences of national division. In bringing together the works drawn from the two authors' war memories, this chapter sheds light on the figures of kyŏnggyein: individuals on the border. Challenging the notion of belonging as dictated by Cold War premises, these liminal figures offer a rare vantage point from which to rethink the formation and operation of the border that separates the North and the South on the Korean Peninsula.
