| Description | The Federal Republic of Germany came into being in 1949 after consolidation of the British, American, and French occupation zones. It encompasses 53% of the area of the former German Reich (based on the boundaries of 1937) and includes the characteristically small-scale farming of much of northwestern and southern Germany. The income earning nature of the farm is of as great a significance for agricultural policy as for sociology. Workers employed on farms and in farm households are classified as family workers and nonfamily workers. Those designated as family workers include farm operators and family members. In the Federal Republic of Germany there are three zones of traditionally dominant inheritance customs. They are: the North German nonpartible inheritance region, the Southeast German nonpartible inheritance region, and the Southwest German partible inheritance region. Family farms are living social units comprised of the following components: family, household, management, and enterprise. Book Name: Family Farming in Europe and America |
