| Description | This chapter attempts to investigate British notions of rurality and gender through Scandinavian lenses. It illustrates the contextual character of knowledge about rurality, femininity and masculinity. Deconstruction of established categories is in accordance with an approach to both rurality and gender as socially and culturally constructed which today dominate rural studies and gender studies respectively. The pros and cons of adopting concepts and theories developed in analyses of the British countryside in other empirical frameworks, as e.g. the Swedish or Norwegian countrysides, are visualised very well in analyses of the phenomenon of migration into rural areas. The chapter describes the concepts of rural idyll and gender idyll and research on urban-rural migration. It focuses on feminist geography literature on the manufacture of gendered identities within space, in which both masculinity and femininity are recognised as social and cultural constructions that are multiple, fluid and contingent.
