| Description | This chapter analyzes road haulier's strategies when using intermodal transport through roll-on/roll-off short sea shipping and motorways of the sea. We first examine the two possible operating strategies – accompanied versus unaccompanied transport – in an attempt to determine their characteristics, the factors that condition their use and their theoretical evolutionary pattern. Second, and based on the information collected at two points in time from a sample of road hauliers using Ro-Ro short sea shipping between Spain and Italy, we analyze over time their evolution regarding their operating strategies. The results show that, overall, the number of shipments by the road hauliers analyzed has evolved favourably over time, but this increase is associated with a limited set of larger companies that operate through the unaccompanied transport operating strategy, reflecting a tendency towards a more concentrated market. In addition, road hauliers that used accompanied transport are not observed to have evolved over time towards a more efficient and sustainable operating strategy such as unaccompanied transport.
