| Description | Advanced traveler information systems (ATIS) will incorporate functions that enable drivers to access information that was previously unavailable or was retrieved from domains outside of vehicle. More specifically, the proposed ATIS functions will encompass in-vehicle routing and navigation systems (IRANS), in-vehicle motorist services and information systems (IMSIS), in-vehicle signing and information systems (ISIS), in-vehicle safety and warning systems (IVSAWS), and commercial vehicle operation (CVO) information systems. When giving drivers access to such systems inside the vehicle, designers must consider not only usability, but also safety (i.e., overloading or distracting the driver). One of the primary concerns is that ATIS will inadvertently reduce safety instead of improving it. The overall impact of ATIS on driving will depend largely on the driver's ability and desire to successfully utilize the information provided. If ATIS is not developed to be driver friendly and easily utilized by the majority of drivers, its overall effectiveness will suffer.
