| Description | How straightforward and comfortable it would be if we could produce three-dimensional (3D) structures on a micrometer scale as we would build a bookcase in our normal life. Reality, however, is not nearly so simple. The fabrication of microscopic objects must be conducted without actual visualization of the process. We can view the outcome only after all fabrication steps are completed. A technology that enables us to handle microscopic components while watching the process in real time would enable us to explore the microscopic world more deeply than ever. This chapter introduces a micromanipulation system for the visually monitored assembly of components on the micrometer to nanometer scale, as established through the development of 3D photonic crystals.
