| Description | Collective memory studies provide richly rewarding understandings of how social worlds operate. Power, identity, and agency are all implicated in collective memory and collective remembering. This chapter first delineates how scholars have conceptualized collective memory and its mechanisms as processes which operate within and across different social contexts. The following three sections discuss how people shape collective memory, use collective memory, and shape others' collective memory. Three main themes emerge from the literature: framing, the idea of authenticity, and bracketing. Scholars tie these themes in with analyses of social-movement theory, gentrification and colonisation, and consumerism as elements of the economic, corporate, and political landscapes within which we navigate our everyday lives. Central to collective memory is the view that we work to negotiate, construct, and reshape memories. These are actions. This view is intimately tied to interactionist approaches, which attend to the ways in which we make and remake the world through our interactions. Collective memory exists and is instantiated through interactions, which makes interactionist approaches important for understanding the mechanisms and social processes involved in the creation and sustainment of collective memory.
