Description	The people who take the course include first-year masters students who have not taught, doctoral students, and novice as well as veteran teachers; increasingly include those interested in not only English language arts but also Teaching English as a Second Language. Some Teacher Study Groups topic choices have included literacy instruction for speakers of second languages, making connections between home and school, authentic assessment, incorporating drama, and culturally relevant instruction of African American children. Group members will help each other learn from the readings, and will raise issues for whole-class discussion. Data collection may include a teaching journal, interviews, surveys, observational notes, taped and transcribed student discussions or conferences, numerical analyses, or comparisons. Teachers in past classes have developed a classroom newspaper; a school publishing center; plans for teaching science, math, and social studies through literature.
