| Description | This chapter emphasizes the challenges of introducing genocide studies into the curriculum and focuses on trends and curriculum developments in genocide studies throughout the United States during the past several decades.$ ^{1}$ It also explores challenges to effective human rights education and proposes ways the subject of genocide, in particular the genocide against the Armenians, may be introduced to a wider audience through genocide studies, world survey courses, and teacher-training programs. The following questions reflect the pedagogical dilemmas of attempting to raise awareness and teach about the possibilities of human construction while teaching about the recurrent patterns of human destructiveness: Is taking part in genocide learned behavior? If it is learned behavior, can people be taught to “unlearn” it? Can becoming aware of the danger signs have any effect on preventing or halting genocide? Through educating about the history of atrocity, of intentional mass destruction of men, women, and children—genocide—are we teaching about remembrance and justice and are we constructing a background for individuals to develop an inclusive, caring community, or are we reinforcing views of a hierarchy of victims and of the destructiveness of hu-mankind?
