Description	This chapter provides an overview of population health in Australia and assist with understanding population health approaches to interventions. It emphasises the rationale for working at the community/population level, and explains the difference between individual-level and population-level approaches to interventions. The social-structural level influences the psychosocial factors, which in turn influence the behavioural pathways that lead to cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. The chapter deals with a global snapshot before briefly reviewing some of the more pressing population health issues in Australia. Australia has taken a 'silo' approach, with vertical programs addressing individual strategies for each chronic disease which are primarily focused on risk factor approaches. The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health, also known as Women's Health Australia, is a large-scale, multidisciplinary project that is examining the health of Australian women over a 20-year period. The incidence and prevalence of mental health disorders and mental illness in Australia are of increasing concern. Book Name: Community Nursing Practice
