| Description | Environmental contamination with the persistent organic pollutants and inorganic heavy metals is reported to pose high risk to the ecological and human health. Soil, being a universal sink, receives all kinds of pollutants, loses its productivity, and ultimately contaminates the food chain. Numerous technologies have emerged for soil remediation such as bioremediation, permeable reactive barriers, excavation, thermal degradation, air sparging and encapsulation. Nanotechnology is an emerging science which has a broad range of applications in diverse fields. Several mechanisms that involve using nanotechnology for soil remediation include stabilization, adsorption, immobilization, redox reactions, Fenton-like reaction, precipitation and photocatalysis. Nanoparticles used in soil remediation are carbon nanoparticles (graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerene and graphene oxides), iron oxides, titanium oxides, zinc oxides, iron sulphides, nanoscale zero-valent iron particles, etc. The high specific surface area of the nanoparticles enables the adsorption of contaminants on the surface. Reductive degradation reaction is carried out to convert the toxic organic pollutants into biodegradable or less toxic materials. This chapter discusses the recent studies and research conducted on the removal of soil contaminants using carbon nanoparticles, inorganic nanoparticles and zero-valent iron nanoparticles. Proper care and study should be carried out before implementing these techniques as they themselves can contaminate the environment. Book Name: Nanomaterials for Environmental Applications |
