| Description | Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is life-threatening and requires early multimodal medical and surgical interventions. Boley et al. (1997) identified Antonio Benivieni from Florence in the latter part of the fifteenth century as the first author in describing AMI in a classical review of the history of AMI. Although Hodgson reported another case from Guy's Hospital in 1815, it was not until further descriptions by Tiedman and Virchow in the mid-1800s that the medical profession really became interested in this condition.
