| Description | C. A. Burland's Ancient Egypt (Hulton, 1957, 94 pp., a) is eminently suitable for this age-range. It is written in a straightforward style with simple illustrations and includes an ingenious index by topics, 'How to find out about ancient Egypt'. Covering the same field for the same age-group, but more ambitious in presentation, is a most attractive book by M. Neurath and J. Ellis, They Lived Like This in Ancient Egypt (Macdonald, 1964, 36 pp., a); this is related to an Isotype filmstrip in the Ancient World series, Life in Ancient Egypt (Common Ground, 1951). The print is large and the text laid out in paragraphs built around line drawings drawn from Egyptian originals. Much of the value of the book is visual; it makes no attempt to follow Egyptian history, but deals with the hunting, Nile floods, boat building and agriculture. There is an interesting section on the simpler hieroglyphs. Book Name: Handbook for History Teachers |
