| Description | This chapter examines aspects of heritage in South Africa by analyzing two postcards that articulate diverging understandings of 'heritage'. It shows that the last century of postcard production and consumption has undergone changes that reflect transformations in the political sphere. Accordingly, during most of the twentieth century, the depiction of heritage sites, both natural and cultural, operated from a monolithic, government-sponsored position and spoke wholly to a white audience. Consequently, monuments, but also places such as Table Mountain and the Drakensberg Mountains, were represented as the exclusive preserve of white people and served to establish their entitlement and identity. Conversely, black people were depicted as objects for visual consumption; whereas white people performed culture, black people remained rooted as bystanders in nature. The last 25 years have seen a more inclusive representation of tangible and intangible heritage that ostensibly reflects the diversity of cultures in South Africa. These show new heritage spaces related to the apartheid struggle, hominoid origins, and the recuperation of ancient black cultures. Nonetheless, old modes of representation have been resilient. The two selected postcards are similar in offering an essentialised view of heritage and identity but also reflect shifts in representation. Book Name: Design and Heritage |
