| Description | Structural Adjustment Programs is the umbrella term used to describe a set of comprehensive economic policies aimed at altering the nature of a country's economy and the role of its government. Starting in the late 1950s, and intensifying soon after political independence in the 1960s, modernization theory gained prominence, as a theoretical paradigm in explaining the state of underdevelopment in Africa, pointing to what Africans should do in order to develop. The programs have also boosted international confidence in Ghana's economy and therefore helped to attract foreign capital especially in the areas of telecommunication, banking, mining and infrastructure. The "modernization" paradigm saw development as a linear path through which societies must travess in order to develop. The economic restructuring program in Ghana may have succeeded in effecting essential macro-level structural changes. Wherever Structural Adjustment Programs have been the main staples of economic management, unemployment, poverty and inequalities tend to increase.
