Description	INTRODUCTION Caregiving couples experience high levels of stress and, when the care recipient is involved in the mental health system, this can compound the stress involved. Parent caregivers in such situations face unique challenges in navigating a fragmented and under-resourced mental health system. ˆis is especially relevant when the adult child, the care recipient, has been given a major psychiatric disorder diagnosis. When this occurs, society in general and mental health professionals in particular may expect parents to manage their adult child's behavior. As parents struggle to meet these expectations by attempting to control the adult child's behavior, family relationships deteriorate, sometimes to the point of estrangement. ˆe stress involved can bring caregiving couples into counseling at times of crisis and can put them at risk of separation or divorce.
