| Description | Children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) require the support of an adult in order to initiate and maintain the conversation. The aim of any language work with children with SLCN is to help children to attain a more acceptable level of language and communication skills for their age. This chapter suggests that those working in early years or school settings can be used alongside any government recommendations and any developments or instructions issued by local authorities about enhancing speech, language and communication development. The speech and language therapist will provide direction and support, but it is the early years workers who can ensure that children make maximum progress by providing the optimum conditions and opportunities for encouraging communication. Any language programme should include the identification of specific language areas such as the area of comprehension or expression, including vocabulary, grammar/syntax and the use of language that need work.
