Description	Lawrence Venuti is best known in translation studies for his concepts of foreignizing and domesticating, and his critique of translators' invisibility. Throughout his career he has emphasized the ethical foundation of his work, an aspect not always fully recognized in the field. This chapter provides a full overview of Venuti's thinking of ethics and translation from the beginning of the 1990s till today. It concentrates on the notion of “ethics of difference,” highlighting how the famous term pair “domestication and foreignization” is not merely a question of aesthetic strategies on the levl of textual choices but of profoundly ethical attitudes and implications. Through an extensive reading of Venuti, this chapter questions the common simplification of these terms and discusses the need for more a fine-tuned understanding of the ethical base of Venuti's project and a more nuanced use of his key terms: when perceived with their ethical layers, they become tools for revealing and resisting imbalances, asymmetries and inequalities and for a democratization of cultural relations through translation.
