| Description | This chapter explores the emotional labour of prison Listeners. Listeners are serving prisoners who volunteer for the role and provide confidential emotional support to vulnerable prisoners, in line with expectations from both the Samaritans and the Prison Service. Despite not receiving a 'wage', Listeners work on a rota 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and are rewarded in non-financial ways. This chapter examines the front stage/back stage strategies employed to cope with the demands of dealing with suicidal and vulnerable prisoners. Listeners adopt appropriate discourses for the role, which includes accepting suicidal intentions of prisoners and acceptance of sex offenders. Listeners are managed by Samaritans volunteers and designated prison staff to cope with the demands of the role alongside their custodial lives. They are supported closely to avoid emotional burnout. Prison officers often exploit Listeners, overburdening them with tasks beyond the remit of the role, and pressuring them to reveal confidential details. Listeners engage in 'dirty emotional labour' as part of their work. They find themselves having to negotiate their identity and deal with cynicism and mistrust from prison officers and other prisoners. Ultimately, many prison Listeners use their role as a way of maintaining perspective on their own lives, through social comparison with other prisoners. The focus in this chapter is solely upon adult male Listeners and does not explore the gendered approach to the Prisoner Listener scheme.
