| Description | Familias Unidas is an evidence-based, family-centered preventive intervention, which aims to prevent Hispanic adolescent behavioral problems, including substance abuse and risky sexual behavior, through improving family functioning. Over the last 40 years, clinical psychologists, public health professionals, social workers, and community members have been developing, refining, and implementing this intervention, locally, nationally, and internationally. In tune with the advances in technology and the field of prevention science, the developers have carefully crafted and adapted the intervention to meet the evolving needs of the community. For example, we have adapted the intervention content to be delivered via the Internet. This chapter covers how we started with the idea of a family-based preventive intervention, created content centered on clinical strategies, incorporated theory and evidence, and refined the content to be tailored to the Hispanic Immigrant family experience. We also discuss lessons learned, with an emphasis on the need to involve the community, build relationships with stakeholders, and consider sustainability and cost-effectiveness from day one of intervention development.
