Description	The Church of the Brethren is one of several Brethren groups that originated with the baptism of eight people in 1708 at Schwarzenau, Germany. The early Brethren were Radical Pietists in that they separated from the state churches in Germany to form their own sect. A minister who traveled extensively from church to church on horseback, John Kline was well-known in several states. Manchester opened on what had been the campus of a United Brethren Church school in North Manchester, Indiana. “Under the leadership of Gladdys E. Muir, Manchester College began in 1948 the first college or university program in peace studies.” In 1969, degree programs were begun on military bases in Greece, Italy, and the Philippines, as well as in California. The college changed its name to the University of La Verne in 1977 because by then several master's degrees and a doctorate in education were being offered.
