| Description | American journalists have long insisted that they are essential to the persistence of American democracy, but they have not devoted much thought to what exactly they do for the country's representative democracy. I asked this question and a second one, what they could do, in a book published in 2003, Democracy and the News, but enough change has taken place in the news media since then to consider both questions once more. This chapter asks first what the news media can do, looking at the roles they and journalists play in the polity. Then it reviews current and likely future changes in the news media and concludes by asking what else the news media and the journalists could do in support of representative democracy.
