| Description | This chapter provides an overview of the acquisition of pidgins and creole languages, with emphasis on creole languages which are the first language of the majority of children in the post-colonial communities where they are spoken. The first section investigates socio-economic conditions out of which the languages emerged in anglophone and francophone territories in the Caribbean and beyond. This leads to a discussion of the different present-day outcomes impacting the linguistic input of the children in the communities. A review of the research on 1st language acquisition in such communities follows. Studies are reviewed in terms of the approaches used, including generative, sociolinguistic and variationist accounts. The final section examines language planning in such an environment. A review of programmes to address issues surrounding 2nd language acquisition in early education is undertaken, along with a discussion of how linguistics has informed and can guide policy and pedagogy.
