| Description | Political pluralism in Macedonia was introduced with changes to existing legislation governing the formation of citizens' associations in 1990. Following these changes, 23 political parties were formed before the first parliamentary elections held in 1990. The Macedonian party system is ethnically divided. The majority of the population, around 65%, consists of ethnic Macedonians, while the ethnic Albanians are around a quarter of the population. The party membership figures have become part of the propaganda battle between the parties. The practice is that parties are silent on how many members they have and then start to bid with figures before every election cycle. This chapter first discusses the evolution of membership organizations and electoral trends. It then explores the definition of party membership according to law and parties' statutes and the outcomes for membership from legal and statutory rules, and reflects on the parties' activities. Finally, the chapter discusses the variations in membership and conceptualization. Book Name: Party Members and Their Importance in Non-EU Countries |
