| Description | Overseas education is one of the conspicuous examples of Japanese women striving to find gender equality and discover themselves. A large number of Japanese women students traverse national boundaries to study at higher education institutions. This phenomenon potentially changes essentialized notions of Japanese women's identities and femininity. The purpose of this study is to provide some fine-grained insights into women's experiences of studying in Australian universities, and to identify whether these understandings are “new”. “New” understandings would reflect distinctive features of the emerging category of Japanese cosmopolitan women in the “third space” and have the potential to provide new directions and new maps to assist such women in understanding and managing their transforming selves that go beyond those of the static images of Japanese women that historically have dominated research in this area.
