| Description | Designers who have made a career in designing for the performance industries have done so because they have a combined interest in performance (drama, dance, opera, music theatre and film, costume, event, puppetry and objects and rock gigs) and design. The combination of the two can be extremely exciting. Design in a performance context, whether it be for theatre, film or TV or whether it be for live or recorded events, brings a visceral and immediate quality to design that few other design disciplines can achieve. Design for Film & TV student Mike Jones, working on his project 3:10 to Yuma (a spaghetti western), describes the challenges of capturing the mood of the piece:'One of the challenging aspects of the hotel bar area was finding the right balance of how wealthy the establishment would be. As it was a frontier town, the décor and ornaments would not beparticularly extravagant, but the script described the hotel as the biggest in town, so it would need to impress a visitor on some level. The amount of lighting was very important as the hotel was to be dark and smoky but also had to be bright enough for the viewer to take in all the elements of the set. The lobby had to be big enough to accommodate the bar, piano and gambling tables but small enough to create a dark dingy atmosphere. The exterior of the hotel also had to balance a sense of grandeur with the materials and building techniques common in frontier towns of the period, and also had to match the layout of the interior – wall dimensions, window positions, etc. It was creating fine balances such as these that was quite challenging but enjoyable and I feel I accomplished this in my design.'
