| Description | The South China Sea (SCS) issue consists of at least three dimensions: the territorial disputes between and among six claimants (i.e., Brunei, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam); the SCS as part of the sea lanes of communication (SLOCs) that stretch from the Indian Ocean through the Straits of Malacca and Lombok, the South China Sea, the Taiwan Straits, on to the North Pacific and beyond; and the marine resources in the SCS, so critical to the lives of ordinary people who live off fishing, and critical to its littoral states for their energy and related needs. The issue is a hugely divisive one and in all dimensions has implications for the security of East and Southeast Asia as well as the broader Asia-Pacific region. It also affects the coherence of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) including its project of building an ASEAN community of three pillars, otherwise known as ASEAN integration.
