| Description | Speaking during rehearsal for The Testament of Mary, an adaptation by Colm Toibin of his book of the same year, the actor Fiona Shaw assesses her long-term collaboration with Deborah Warner. In contrast to extensive academic interest in Katie Mitchell, who claims a more or less step-by-step process in play rehearsal, it is this lack of definitive approach that, in part, resists a scholarly determination of Warner's practice. Warner is quite open about the fact that when Old Vic approached her to consider directing King Lear, she was not looking again to direct a play she had already staged twice. Most importantly, Warner's promotion of not only an ensemble ethos, but also a set of consciously individual personalities, intends in some way to confront and revitalise a text. While Warner's rehearsals demonstrate a fundamental respect for the text, they are always the basis for investigation of clear physical action, discovered by the actor, up on her or his feet.
