| Description | Background: Children exposed to disasters often experience high levels of distress and are at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objectives and Design: This study used a mixed method design to establish the psychological impact of the 2014 Hazelwood mine fire and resultant smoke exposure on young people. 323 young people from Morwell and surrounding areas completed the Children's Revised Impact of Events Scale (CRIES). A stratified random sample of 69 Morwell participants then participated in an interview. Results: Analysis of CRIES results indicated moderate levels of distress on average, with heightened levels of distress in approximately one quarter of participants. The interviews revealed that children who were negatively affected by the event reported concerns about the health impacts and ongoing intrusive thoughts about the fire. Conclusions: This highlights the need for emergency and public health responses to future events, including those with unclear health outcomes, to recognise and respond to potential distress in the community, particularly in younger age groups. |
