| Abstract | A new technique is described for the accurate determination of small NMR spin coupling constants. The multiplet under investigation is recorded under coupled and decoupled conditions, and then corresponding ordinates of the time-domain signals are divided, leaving only the modulation term, cosn(πJISt) where n is the number of equivalent protons in the irradiated group. Precautions are taken to avoid division by zero or near-zero values. The Fourier transform of the quotient is a single multiplet (1 : 1 doublet, 1 : 2 : 1 triplet, or 1 : 3 : 3 : 1 quartet) giving a direct measure of the coupling constant. The technique is illustrated with reference to the proton–proton couplings in furan-2-aldehyde in various solvents. The reproducibility of the measurements is superior to ±0.04 Hz and the results are in good agreement with those from a related technique where the decoupled multiplet is reconvoluted with a trial coupling J* which is varied to give best fit with the fully coupled multiplet. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
