| Abstract | Although the number of new cases of Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) has increased rapidly in the last few decades, the molecular basis of its pathogenesis is not completely understood. Activation of Hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway has been shown to be a key factor driving the development of BCC. The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway was also shown to be activated in BCCs and to perhaps modulate the activity of Hh pathway. We have previously identified a novel mechanism by which Wnt signaling regulates the transcriptional outcome of Hh signaling pathway. We demonstrated that CRD-BP, a direct target of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling, binds to GLI1 mRNA, stabilizes it, and consequently upregulates its levels (mRNA and protein) and activities. We hypothesized that Wnt-induced and CRD-BP-dependent regulation of GLI1 expression and activities is important to the development of BCC. In this study, we show that CRD-BP is over-expressed in BCC and that its expression positively correlates with the activation of both Wnt and Hh signaling pathways. We also describe the generation and characterization of a human BCC cell line. This cell line was utilized to demonstrate the importance of CRD-BP-dependent regulation of GLI1 expression and activities in the development of BCC. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
