| Abstract | BACKGROUND—A study wasundertaken to investigate the effect of gas cooking on the lungfunction of adolescents while considering serum IgE level as a possibleeffect modifier. METHOD—The crosssectional study was performed in 702 subjects aged 11-13 years fromprimary and secondary schools in Civitavecchia and Viterbo ( Latiumregion in Central Italy), categorised according to how often they werein the kitchen while the mother cooked (never, sometimes, often). Datawere collected by questionnaire and lung function was measured byspirometric tests. Bronchial hyperresponsiveness was evaluated by themethacholine test, atopic status by a skin prick test, and a bloodsample was collected to determine serum IgE levels. The results wereanalysed separately for boys and girls. Multiple regression analysiswas performed, taking functional parameters (FEV1,FEV1/FVC, FEF25-75, FEF50,FEF75) as the dependent variables and age, height, parental smoking, and father's education as independent variables. RESULTS—There was noassociation between time spent in the kitchen and lung function levelin boys, but a reduction in lung function was detected in girls whichwas statistically significant for FEF75 (sometimes-10.3%, often -11.1%). After stratifying boys and girls into fourgroups on the basis of the IgE serum level (below and above the medianvalue of IgE), the reduction in lung function was significant in girlswith a high IgE value whereas no significant deleterious effects wereevident in girls with a low IgE value or in boys with either a low orhigh IgE. The results remained substantially unchanged after excludinggirls with a response to methacholine below the concentration of4 mg/ml, asthmatic patients, and those with positive skin prick tests. CONCLUSION—Gas cookinghas a harmful effect on the lung function of girls with a high serumlevel of IgE. We do not know whether serum IgE, a marker of allergicsusceptibility, is a simple indicator that an inflammatory process isin progress or whether it is involved in the pathogenesis of injuryleading to bronchial obstruction. |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.

NDLI is a conglomeration of freely available or institutionally contributed or donated or publisher managed contents. Almost all these contents are hosted and accessed from respective sources. The responsibility for authenticity, relevance, completeness, accuracy, reliability and suitability of these contents rests with the respective organization and NDLI has no responsibility or liability for these. Every effort is made to keep the NDLI portal up and running smoothly unless there are some unavoidable technical issues.
