| Abstract | Early detection of caries is the basic principle in order to reduce the loss of tooth structure and the creation of appropriate treatment plan. Occlusal surfaces that characterize with pit and fissure systems are decaying areas. The diagnosis of the initial lesions on these surfaces is very important. Traditionally, the diagnosis of caries in occlusal surfaces is made by using dental mirror and sond. But; diversity in the fissure morphology, probe’s edge, probe application pressure of physician and various other factors prevents to obtain objective results. Caries diagnosis is performed mainly by means of radiography in addition to clinical observations. But this method has some restrictions because subjectively. Many new methods have been developed in conjunction with the development of technology. In this review, various studies and results about current caries diagnosis methods are presented comparatively. |
