Abstract	La création de la République populaire entraîna un brusque changement dans l’élite politique et le mode de gouvernance du pays. Le contrôle exercé par les autorités centrales se fit bien plus important qu’à l’époque de la dynastie Qing ou du KMT. Il s’étendait aux derniers échelons de l’appareil de l’État, aux lieux de travail, aux exploitations agricoles et aux foyers. Le parti, extrêmement discipliné, a maintenu une surveillance de chaque instant sur la machine administrative régulière. L’armée a été étroitement intégrée au système. La propagande politique et idéologique était diffusée par des mouvements de masse contrôlés par le parti. Les intérêts des propriétaires terriens et des capitalistes nationaux et étrangers disparurent avec la suppression de la propriété privée. La Chine devint une économie dirigée calquée sur le modèle soviétique. Après un siècle de capitulations et de soumission aux incursions et aux agressions étrangères, le nouveau régime s’attacha à défendre avec une énergie farouche l’intégrité nationale de la Chine, acceptant l’idée de fonctionner en n’entretenant que des liens minimaux avec l’économie mondiale.
