Abstract	Au cours des années 70 et 80, nous nous étions habitués à l’idée que, malgré la course à l’urbanisation un peu partout dans le monde en développement et dans le monde industriel, les communications modernes dans les sociétés avancées rendaient les grandes villes obsolètes en tant que modèle de développement. Pire encore, on disait que ces villes étaient un boulet pour le reste de la société, étant donné que leur déclin économique chronique entraînait en leur sein des concentrations de plus en plus importantes de problèmes sociaux dont la résolution impliquait de grosses dépenses publiques afin d’éviter un conflit ouvert. Des mesures semblaient notamment nécessaires pour inverser les sorties continues de capitaux hors des villes qu’impliquaient les jugements des marchés. Certains problèmes réels pointés par cette analyse pessimiste demeurent mais, au cours des quinze dernières années, les opinions générales vis-à-vis des villes et les questions qui se posent pour les pays de la zone OCDE ont évolué dans trois directions qui marquent une progression majeure dans notre compréhension du rôle de ces villes.
