Abstract	Ce chapitre a pour but d’illustrer par un exemple comment, dans le marché actuel, on peut utiliser des mesures de la performance en vue de promouvoir l’amélioration de la qualité des soins de santé. L’approche présentée s’appuie sur un modèle de consommateurs avertis qui doivent choisir entre des fournisseurs de soins de santé en concurrence, et dont les critères de sélection sont fondés sur le prix et la qualité. En présentant aux consommateurs de l’information sur la qualité, on incite les fournisseurs de soins de santé, soucieux de conserver ou d’augmenter leurs parts du marché, à améliorer leur performance. Ce chapitre se concentre sur les efforts accomplis aux États-Unis pour offrir aux consommateurs des informations sur la performance. L’étude donne un aperçu des activités de mesure des performances en cours et résume les travaux empiriques sur l’amélioration de la qualité ainsi obtenue : en bref, les efforts n’en sont qu’à leur début et n’ont pas encore donné des résultats très probants…
