Abstract	En Chile, la educación obligatoria dura doce años y normalmente comienza a la edad de seis años. Ocho años dura la educación primaria (elemental) y cuatro la educación secundaria. Las escuelas secundarias se dividen en tres categorías: municipal, privada con subsidio (que reciben subvención de igual valor) y privadas con pago. Las escuelas municipales que funcionan en las 345 comunas pueden cobrar sólo por la educación secundaria.
