Abstract	Dans un contexte économique, social et international en mutation, le Japon est parvenu à réduire certaines pressions environnementales, notamment la consommation énergétique, les émissions atmosphériques, les prélèvements d’eau et la production de déchets municipaux. Toutefois, les émissions de gaz à effet de serre et la production de déchets non municipaux ont augmenté, les pressions se sont accentuées sur la nature et la biodiversité, et la pollution de l’air et de l’eau demeure préoccupante dans plusieurs zones. Le pays a défini un modèle spécifique de société durable, fondé sur une économie sobre en carbone, un cycle rationnel des matières et la conservation de la biodiversité. Ces trois grands piliers figurent dans les plans environnementaux qui ont été approuvés au niveau national et local durant la période examinée. Le Japon a également pris des mesures pour améliorer la coordination interinstitutionnelle et la prise en compte des aspects environnementaux dans la planification sectorielle.
