| Abstract | For the past few decades there has been an increasing interest in the different educational experiences, success and eventual outcomes that prevail for males and for females. The interest in this area was fuelled in part by a perceived lack of interest and success of females in a number of areas of schooling – notably mathematics and the physical sciences. In more recent times there has also been a focus on the lack of engagement and success of males, especially in the area of reading. Educational policy has to take into account the existence of gender differences in performance to be effective in promoting quality student outcomes and equity. This report draws heavily on the OECD’s Programme for International Assessment (PISA) where it has been found that female students do better in reading (OECD, 2001) and male students do somewhat better in mathematics (OECD, 2004). In science, the picture is more complex. It has been found that student attitudes and engagement explain, in part, gender difference in mathematics and reading, a finding that, by itself, can foster a better understanding of how students learn and thereby help design more effective educational policies (OECD, 2007a). |

National Digital Library of India (NDLI) is a virtual repository of learning resources which is not just a repository with search/browse facilities but provides a host of services for the learner community. It is sponsored and mentored by Ministry of Education, Government of India, through its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NMEICT). Filtered and federated searching is employed to facilitate focused searching so that learners can find the right resource with least effort and in minimum time. NDLI provides user group-specific services such as Examination Preparatory for School and College students and job aspirants. Services for Researchers and general learners are also provided. NDLI is designed to hold content of any language and provides interface support for 10 most widely used Indian languages. It is built to provide support for all academic levels including researchers and life-long learners, all disciplines, all popular forms of access devices and differently-abled learners. It is designed to enable people to learn and prepare from best practices from all over the world and to facilitate researchers to perform inter-linked exploration from multiple sources. It is developed, operated and maintained from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
