| Description | Although local government has played an important role in rural China’s development, some disadvantages of government-led rural construction have gradually emerged with changes in socioeconomic structure, which have negative impacts on rural development. To solve the problems of the traditional rural construction pattern, the introduction of market mechanisms into rural construction became the consensus in theory and in practice. Extant studies emphasize the importance of a market-driven rural construction pattern; however, they do not discuss how to practice this pattern in detail. Thus, this paper uses a case study and comparative analysis to illustrate the background, implementation process and outcomes of the market-driven pattern, aiming to identify the intrinsic dynamics among the local government, market capital and villagers in the market-driven pattern. We argue that although the transformation from a government-led to market-driven pattern is a gradual process, the market-driven pattern is an alternative to the traditional pattern and can better fulfill villagers’ interests and enhance sustainable rural development. |
