| Abstract | Twenty-three different fields in the Rahuri Tahsil of Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra State, showing irregular patches of non-chlorotic and chlorotic plants of adsail sugarcane (cv. CO-740) were selected and the properties of field soils and characteristics of plants were studied. Two plants from chlorotic site and two plants from non-chlorotic site from the same field were dug out with their roots intact. A composite soil sample beneath each plant was collected separately and analysed for pH, EC, O.C. and soluble cations and anions. Maillable portion of cane was crushed and juice was analysed for pH, EC, inorganic cations and anions and reducina and non-reducing sugar contents. The chlorotic plants had lower mi liable cane and. restricted root growth as well as lower root dry matter and length of internode. The weight of millable canes, weight of plant tops and height of canes (average) were less in chloro~ tic plants than non-chlorotic plants. The juice of chlorotic plants contained more soluble salts (EC), Na, Mg, CI and reducing sugars, whereas juice of non-chlorotic plant contained more Ca, SO. and non-reducing sugar concentration. The increased Ca in juice was associated with decreased Mg in juice in the non-chlorotic plants and vice-versa in chlorotic plants. The higher Na and CI in the juice and restricted growth of roots were observed in chlorotic plants, while the higher Ca in the soil was observed to be associated with increased root growth and leaf chlorophyll of sugarcane. |
